A running account of the "race without an entry fee"..... The Tuesday night ride

Tuesday the 3rd

Rondo yelling at someone - check
Cross-eye inducing speed - check
The long loop (at only minutes more then last week) - check
Everyone's Favorite Dave spitting on someone - check
Zero entry fee - check
Robyn cursing!?!?

Another great ride tonight folks. Plenty of guys, plenty of drama, plenty of speed. And we all managed to keep it safe as well. Right from the get go the message was clear. It was gonna be one for the books. The front got crowded very quickly and a couple of guys pegged it early. There was a new guy in a TargetTraining kit who was putting on a seminar all night long. VQ Rob and Mahoney were also up there early on. It was a true drag race to get to the pave section but everyone seemed to get thru ok. Zero vehicular traffic def helped as guys were diving all over the place. From there Hunter P hit the front with Guido, Rondo, Dillon P and the Target Training guy. Strong efforts were needed to stay up front. Guido rode the front alone for kilo heading up to Mountain rd and then guys like Hunter P, Target Training, and Mahoney took over. Good to see Tall Johnny back in the fold as well.
Mahoney got things rolling on Mountain road, and was followed up by Mike McG and other Zane's guys. With the tail wind and everyone's eager-beaver attitude it very well could have been record time to the light at route 68 for the peleton. Tensions ran a little higher then usual when there was some slower work up front and gaps allowed open. Rondo made sure everyone was on the same page though.
French Casey sprint started the group once onto Moss Farms after the light, but then promptly checked out for the night. Coming up to the corner and the chicane, there was a dangerous looking group forming off the front a bit ( Guido, Eric M, A Yalie, The Garbernator, Aidan, etc.)  but Chris C, Julio, and Hunter P shored up the gap before the dive thru the comer. That slowed things a little as everyone hit the hill, giving Chris C and Hunter P a chance to roll off the front briefly. It was back to full gas as the full peleton went past the industrial park and toward Southington. Only a couple of people pulled off for the short loop. Good to see solidarity. Heading over the highway, another group was muscling off the front, ( CCBer, Eric M, Mike McG, Joshy G, GGarber, Guido again, and a couple of others. ). There were a couple of guys to pull it back together, Benje, Hutner P etc. Also the light was red, so everyone got a breather.
Aidan, Target Training and Mike McG rode hard once onto Mount Vernon, forcing everyone to pick up the slack. Joshy G started to hang out near the front and inflict pain. Hacker as well. The ride to the turnaround was more of the same, fast and deliberate. No one was accidentally finding themselves up front. The false flat section, usually a spot of field detonation was rendered moot thanks to a D bag parked in the middle of the lane. Aidan got rolling after that along with Rattatat, Eric M, and DJ Blizzack. A subsequent pull from Ratta almost broke a trio free but it stayed together. Target Training still was up there and content to go fast for everyone. Things calmed slightly before the turn to the sprint. But once onto Welch rd. it started getting interesting. There were no monster attacks or efforts as the bunch got to the corner, although Tri Doug was up there serving up some humble pie to the naysayers. He rolled thru the corner first as the strong guys lined up behind to ramp it up. Mike McG started it off immediately after the corner, pulling off a couple of riders and stretching it out into the wind. It quickly became a limited race for the sprint as gaps and distances were too much for guys to make up. Up front Mike, Joshy G, Target Training, and GrahamCrackerGarber were not getting caught. Mikey gets the notch in the belt this time, ringing the bell for first. It all came back together soon after. Giving everyone a slight chance to recover. Eric M had a dig on the descent, rolling off with a gap but gettting caught before the corner on West St.
The ride went sedate for a while with Dillon P's demo set of Cole's the only thing breaking the silence. Once past the chopped up road on Sandbank rd., Chris C, Bike Shop Bob, Mahoney and Dillon P moved up front to set the pace and feel out the front. Dillon P then rode off alone for a bit but would come back to the group as everyone started the charge uphill by Cheshire Park. The headwind would take its toll on the run in to Stop n Shop. After the CCBer, Danny B, Peter P and Tall John got done with pulls, THX, Tri Doug and Graham jumped out front. That was short lived as Rattatat was leading the rest of the sprinters ( Jacinto, Chris C , Hunter P, Mike McG ) up and into the sprint. Little T jumped from 6 or 7 wheels back and was able to hold on to it, despite a good charge to the line from Hacker and Jacinto.
Once past the lights, Aidan hit the front full gas and tore of a gap that would take some chasing down. At some point Everyone's Favorite Dave took issue with the humming noise coming from one of the Yalies' ( Ian Forsyth?) cyclocross tires. Some words were exchanged, some threats to "F*ck%n pull over to get shown some more". In the end, the Yalie seemed content to laugh it off like last semester's housing bill, with Dave more determined on making a point with his saliva glands. We all got a good chuckle out of it, and once it was back to riding, it was almost time to wrap this baby up. Too many guys to list had a hand in the final kilo's. For the last push, the regulars had it timed well. Mike McG, Eric M, Jacinto, Little T off the front with Guido, Aidan, Graham and Ferraro from Central Wheel shooting across the gap. Guido rode up and thru in usual fashion.
Up the hill, Mahoney jumped very early in response to a downright Schleckish Dillon P, but both imploded midway up, letting Hunter P get the prize for both "up the hill first" and "ugliest socks of the night". Gregg F, C-Dale Rick, Tri Doug and the Central Wheel boys also closed the ride out on the hill.

In all honesty, I came across this comment from a former Yale Cycling Team Captain: GC.

Great to be out there last night. My comment includes being witness to all of the "drama" that makes this ride so entertaining. For the lack of an admission price, we can all drink beer for free after the ride!
If some wisdom can be imparted to the masses, I would proclaim, ‘…be happy that you're riding your bike fast and stay away from Dave…’ (lol)
And one last thing. Don’t we all look forward to reading the fiction that the Chesire guys put together every week? (thankyou Guys) You clearly don't get that at the "Rent"......

Hi Guys,

Eric Fischer here. I'm the captain of the Yale Cycling Team and was the scrawny dude on the 'cross bike this week. I'd like to address the "it's cool to hate the Yale kids" attitude you all seem to be embracing. I'm hoping that this is a disposition born of ignorance, so let me tell you a bit about the team.

The Yale Cycling Team exists primarily to introduce and encourage new riders to what we feel is an extremely joyful sport. We devote a great deal of energy to recruiting, coaching, and supporting new athletes as they travel through the ranks of collegiate racing. We have also found outside support to fund the team so that new riders don't have to be burdened by the cost of an 8-week racing campaign.

This philosophy has allowed our new athletes to progress at an extraordinary rate and has produced several national-level competitors, including a few champions, in recent years. It is unclear to me what part of this mission is so offensive to all of you.

One of our riders, Dan, who dominated all of you in the sprint a few weeks ago, has only been racing for two seasons. Another, Ian, who you will regularly see at the front of your ride, just finished his first racing season. One of our female riders and myself qualified for collegiate nats this year. These are accomplishments that the more experienced racers among you should laud, but instead these riders are forced to put up with your persistent and childish sniping.

I would encourage all of you to evaluate the manner in which you treat others, especially young people. You should know that the attitude you project to others can discourage them from participating in the sport. It would be more productive, and I'm sure would make you all happier, to extend a little kindness to people who are working their way up, and succeeding, in the sport. If you have any constructive comments or would like more info about the team you're welcome to email me at any time. Eric.Fischer at Yale.edu.

Thanks,
e

I'll handle this one guys:
"The Yale Cycling Team exists primarily to introduce and encourage new riders to what we feel is an extremely joyful sport. "
--Really?! shocking.... thanks for clearing that up. WE had no idea.

"has produced several national-level competitors, including a few champions"
-- Trust us dude, we have done more riding and competing with these past champs then you have chump. They have way more class then you as well, in addition to being superior riders.

"Dan, who dominated all of you in the sprint a few weeks ago, "
-- Yes you personally deserve a pat on the back for that. Why not come and and try for yourself instead of hiding behind cyclocross tires.

"You should know that the attitude you project to others can discourage them from participating in the sport. "
-- Nah, it's your kind of douchebaggery that does more to discourage riders.

Listen dude, don't take it all so personally. We actually feel bad for you for having to deal with dickheads of our own like Dave.

You guys have some skill and talent and that's awesome. We like having on you one the ride. But there is a lot to learn of bike racing that can not be gained in even a couple of years, especially when the one learning it has a predisposition to a sense of entitlement.

Eric Fischer said...

@Random Anonymous Dude

Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately, I'm in the process of moving so it was either the cross bike or not riding this week. Since I'm assuming you've never raced with me, I would appreciate you not making presumptions about the class with which is race.

I'm not contending that there is not a great deal for us all to learn about the sport. I'm simply asking that you afford us the same respect and kindness that we approach you with. I didn't realize that was acting with entitlement. Thanks for clearing that up.

Anonymous said...

Eric, do you have a vag infection too? Jeez. You got a lot to learn if you think a little razzing of college kids from a much older, more wiser, more married-with-kids-&-houses bunch of older guys is anything new and terribly offensive.

Get over yourself and take it on the chops like a good sport. Or better yet, save it for the weekend when you have a number pinned to your back.

Thanks for your suggestion. I consulted my OB/GYN and she assured me that my vag was in tip top shape.

I hate to burst your bubble, but it's "razzing" when you're doing it to your buddies. When you do it to strangers, it's just you being an asshole.

To both of the anon's:

I'm simply suggesting that you turn your default switch away from the "dickhead" setting for a little while. I can't imagine it makes you happy to be so angry.

To everyone else:

Please don't get the wrong impression. I've met a lot of very nice, warm, and funny people on the Tuesday night ride and I appreciate the workout. Its heartening to know that a lot of you still find bike riding to be fun, it's the people that are to good at bike racing to enjoy it that I take exception to.

If anyone would like to test their legs, I'll be at the 1/2/3 points race in T-Town tonight "with numbers on my back".

Eric,

You struggled to make the top 20 at Bethel in the 4's before you upgraded. So relax . . .

Secondly, every group has a dynamic. You should know that. You should also know not to judge things before you have a full understanding of them. This ride is like Family Guy: It's an equal opportunity offender. No one is immune. It's just how we working stiffs roll; it's how we let off steam and have fun.

Lastly, you don't have to tell us about all your talent. Many a Yalie have ridden this ride, from the More recent Adam Francis and Craig Luekins -- the former a winner of Battenkill and the later the National Champ you spoke of -- to the more seasoned Curtis (who would kick your ass right now) and former Yale Captin Pete P who was on the ride the other night. Plus we have Guido and Hacker.

So relax your blue-blood viens, simmer back down to room temperature and wax eloquent at the next tea and bisquick social that over at Pierson rather than on the blog. Just show up the ride, have fun, and take it all in stride.

I'm glad to see you've learned how to use road results. I'm happy to discuss Bethel with you, although I don't feel like I need to justify any of my results to some random a-hole on the internet. I bike race for fun, not so that I can try to demean other people in a misguided attempt to make myself feel better.

No one was struggling at Bethel this spring. It was an absurdly slow race and I sat out of the sprint as it was clear there was going to be a wreck with all of the awesome bike handling going on. There was. I'll always take safety over drubbing pathetic old men in a spring training race.

I'm happy to keep addressing whatever problems you gentlemen have with me or my teammates. If the alternative is to have you keep passive aggressively berate a bunch of graduate students looking for a workout, I'd rather you anonymously direct your anger at me.

Cheers.

Sorry to miss your comment. The focus of this discussion is the idea that you yelling at people on a Tuesday night group ride does absolutely nothing to make the sport better or more enjoyable. Eric,
Based on some of your comments, you note that a minority of the seasoned SGR riders are being disrespectful to the young Yale cyclists who are just being introduced to this sport. You go on to act in a similar manner by making general comments about this group of riders. You then act surprised by the responses.
Personally, I’ve been doing this ride for over 25 years and have ridden with many new riders, including those from Yale, who have learned “group etiquette” from participating on this ride. Needless to say, it seems your opinions do not reflect the new riders that I know and Yale cyclists who have ridden with us in the past, and perhaps at the present.
We take exception to the way you “generalize”, brag and then write in a manner that is personal and in poor taste. Clearly, you need to loosen up a bit and not take things so personally. Even Hunter P tried to diffuse the discussion, but you continued with your pointed comments. Why don’t you try to behave like Jacob Hacker, a longtime SGR rider and gentleman, who should be a clear role model to your team?
If there is dangerous riding being done by anyone on this ride, the group is comfortable enough to call–out that rider, with the hope that the new rider will learn from his/her mistake. As you know, it’s tough to have a civilized conversation when your heart-rate is beating at 175 BPM. There are many guys who have been racing for 20+ years on this ride and you have nothing to learn from them?
Sincerely,
Tall John

@ John

Thanks for your reply. I would encourage you to reread my previous posts. For example:

"Please don't get the wrong impression. I've met a lot of very nice, warm, and funny people on the Tuesday night ride and I appreciate the workout. Its heartening to know that a lot of you still find bike riding to be fun."

And

"I'm not contending that there is not a great deal for us all to learn about the sport. I'm simply asking that you afford us the same respect and kindness that we approach you with"

I don't quite see where you're coming from. With the exception of my first post, I've only responded to individuals. In this circumstance, a personal tone seems appropriate.

My contention is that many members of the ride act with poor "group etiquette", as you put it. This is not behavior I would like my teammates or myself to emulate.

Ben said...

Eric,

All of your posts have been condescending and arrogant. You are seriously going to attempt to extol the jaw-dropping mission of the Yale Cycling Team when many former Yale cyclists currently ride among us? But what's most important and what you still don't get is that there is no us and you. You are not to be afforded anything by us. This is an integrated community. Though we may bust lots of balls, there is a lot of wisdom that is imparted down from those more experienced. Sometimes it comes in the form of yelling. So what, so long as it comes. No one condones spitting. That is a sad rarity that we are all sorry happened. But neither do we condone elitism. Take it from me, just come back and ride. If you're afraid of behavior modeling, your teammates should be autonomous thinkers enough to take what they need and leave what they don't. And if it's respect you're actually after, ride hard and you'll find it.

Eric once again put your comments in the who gives a shit file. Then tuck it In the who gives a fuck folder. In other words shut the fuck up and rode your bike

Eric Fischer said...

@ Ben

To be frank, my initial post was not prompted by the spitting incident. That was a non-issue to me. It was however, triggered by the constant and unnecessary vein of "f*ck the Yale guys" and "the Yale guys suck" that has been going around since we started coming to the ride six weeks ago. I'm not seeing much "integrated community" there, nor any effective chance to impart some deep Tuesday night group riding wisdom. It was also prompted by Dave, after the spitting incident, chasing after my cross bike screaming "you're a fa**ot". No extra comment is necessary there.

I was simply trying to give you a little background on what we do with the team to try and stem the steady flow of bullshit that has been coming our way.

Your contention that "you are not to be afforded anything by us" is precisely the attitude I'm taking issue with. I would encourage you to try approaching people with a little bit of kindness and respect. Riding a bike fast certainly shouldn't be a prerequisite for that kind of humanity.

Anonymous said...

Ben said...

Eric,

You know who your former captain GC is, right? If he can laugh at that quote and if other Yalies can laugh at, or at least off, the whiffenpoof jokes why can't you? Like we've been saying, ad nauseum, everybody's balls get busted. Period! French Casey got called out on the blog for getting shot out the back quickly. Here's a Yalie that raced in Europe . . . Just ask him, he'll tell you!! But you don't even know him. If you did you would know that he's not even read this weeks blog because he doesn't give a shit. And six weeks isn't that long of a time frame in respect to cycling. Certainly not long enough to learn anything substantial. This is evidenced by the fact that you seem so intent on changing a dynamic 25 years in the making. Tall John tried to teach you something and you snubbed him. I've learned A LOT from the guys on this ride. And what I've learned most is that I don't know shit. I too have been yelled at and called all sorts of names, but so has everyone else. However, my skin is thick and frankly I don't give a shit. It is a group training ride after all. It's about testing your legs, learning and having fun. If want anything more than that, humanity for instance, go sign up for Oxfam.

Seriously, my good man. Consider this a moot point from here on out. Know that if you're getting yelled at you're probably in better standing than you realize. Use any aggression that you may harbor as fuel for next weeks ride.

Now, how about Belgian Malinois? Is that a good dog or what?

Rondo said...

Wow Dude you don't get do you! Cycling is a hard sport both mentally and physically. Now that we know saying that Yale guys suck we can get under your skin. I think that you will be hearing that Yale guys suck more often. Because if I say that Yale guys suck and I get you off your game, then I'm going to say Yale guys suck more often. In fact I think that more people in the pack will begin to say that Yale guys suck. Now in the back of your over sized mind you might begin to think do Yale guys suck? Once that little bit of doubt creeps in you might start to believe that indeed Yale guys suck. If I were you I would not let anyone know that by saying that Yale guys suck it bothers you. Rondo,

I would also recommend that you STFU before you lose any credibility that you might still have here. You should re-read your last post. It reeks of an 8 year-old mentality. It is your douche-bagness that gives cycling a bad name. Is your ego so big and your penis so small that you actually make it a goal to get under people's skin on a training ride?

But seriously, if you are really happy to stand by that post, taking pride in intentionally being an asshole, than you are even more immature than I realizes.

Pretty sad and pathetic for an old man. I would attribute this to being washed-up, but I think you had to achieve something earlier in life to be considered "washed-up" later in life. Otherwise I think it is just considered one long, perpetual fail in life.

Eric Fischer said...

I think you're missing the point, buddy. The simple fact that you're trying to "get under someone's skin" on a group ride is absolutely absurd. I would hope that you can get through a Tuesday night fun ride without being a dick or tying to play head games. Otherwise, you might want to talk to someone about that.

I'm sorry to offend the parade of anonymous posters with the idea that riding bikes can be both fun and pleasant. I guess the world is full of big ideas.

It just sucks to see that people with your mentality exist....especially in recreational cycling.

Additionally, I don't know what cat C is....but then again, I have only raced mountain bikes. What I do know, is that people in life that measure achievement in life with local bike victories don't meet the prerequisites to be washed-up later in life.

Sorry to hear about the micropenis.

No you are missing the point. If someone saying that Yale guys suck makes you not want to ride your bike then you should not be in the sport. What are you going to do when your boss yells at you? The way you are I bet you will fold like a deck of cards. Life is not all roses, you guys had better grow a thicker skin or stay in school where they tell you how great you are. For the record I don't give you guys a second thought. I just think it's funny that you care what anyone thinks.

Rondo I think the point is that it is really sad that you profess here that you are intentionally trying to be an asshole. That is, you are intentionally making yourself someone that the vast majority of society tries to avoid.

The fact that you admit that and then take pride in it, is really sad.

End of story.

Oh, and I have little worry about my son. His role model doesn't have an ax to grind with the world. What I do worry about, are any young people you have, or ever will, come in contact with.

However, on behalf of the world, I would like to thank you for your tireless efforts to harden everyone up. It is too bad I didn't have someone like you to demonstrate to me how to fail as a person when I was in college. It is a miracle I can succeed in the "real world" without that kind of mentorship. We need more good men like you "fighting the good fight".

Another Yalie here.

I can't say that I agree with everything Eric's laying down. I don't find the razzing or yelling or fuck you's to be anything more than a joke and like the chance to come out and bury myself each week. That said, I do get the sense that some of the guys out there do feel like a certain part of the sport (and life) has to involve being a dick. THAT said, those people I don't mind tolerating on the ride (because they go fast and can make it interesting) or in life (because they've managed, possibly by being a dick, to amass some small amount of power that they use to full dickfect). I'm not gonna name names, cuz I don't know any, but also cuz it's just a feeling. I've never had any issue with anyone on the ride and I don't expect anything from anyone. The general shit about Yale seems as much a compliment as a dig, but I've never read too much into it in any case.

That's all I got. Everything else I got to say I can say with my legs.

who did all this yelling?

The Crew at Cheshire Cycle said...

Well siad Spencer. Was just going to add this and hopefully we all can get on with our routines.

The Yale guys got off to a bad first impression with their race simulation amateur blocking efforts a few weeks ago. That type of misplaced team intensity is something the ride hasnt seen in a long time, if ever.

You guys were really the first ones to break the rules of group etiquette.

However, You guys can be legit riders and have added a fair amount of variety to the ride these weeks with strong riding. Everyone is still ok with poking fun at you BECAUSE you guys are out there mixing it up. The new guys on the block sort to speak.

The ride has seen plenty of new faces come and go and has had its fair share of visiting teams, even if its just 2 guys on a given week. You don't see them singled out ("razzed") because they probably weren't making an impression. There, that's it.
Don't make us put some weird disclaimer on the site.

@ Rondo

Being nice to people at a bike ride = not succeeding at your job. Amazing logical leap. Maybe you really do have something valuable to teach me.

@ Anon # 5832

You're right, it would make a wonderful sociological study. Not my field, but a wonderful idea none the less. We're not working here, quite the opposite, so your comment about working well with others doesn't apply.

Finally, Spencer is a fine ombudsman.

I haven't been able to do the ride for a while and even when I could, I was pack fill at best. I've been yelled at when I got in the way, which is fair, but for the most part all I got was encouragement, and many pushes when I was suffering. This is a great ride with great people and if you're having a problem you really need to do some self reflection.

Another Yalie posting.

I haven't been yelled, spit, or cursed at yet at SG but I have no doubt it'll come eventually. And, that's fine. It's just the way the Tuesday night ride is. I've ridden with a bunch of the SG guys on other stuff like Yale's Saturday or Guido's Friday morning and everyone is chill, nice, relaxed, and laughing on those (won't name names here to keep all the mean-guy reputations going). The same guys come out to SG intense and ready. Fine, I get that way a little bit myself.

Eric was a great captain this year, did a lot of hard work on and off the bike, and raced well. I just don't want his comments to turn the whole Tuesday group against the few quick Yalies that like to join you guys. It's great training and a different dynamic than the soft pedaling that happens on a lot of rides. I'll be back for more in the Fall.

Thanks Yalies for posting, we appreciate these comments that have a true "caring" that Captain Eric speaks, but doesn't clearly demonstrate in behavior.

What it comes down to is:
We all love cycling
let's try and remember that!

Can we get to 100 posts this week?

if you can't handle getting yelled at, don't go to europe.

Yet another yalie here.

Like Spencer and Ian, I see where Eric is coming from and I think many of the replies directed at him and defending the practice of being an a-hole because "that's the way it has always been" are lame. However, I have pretty thick skin and personally find it pretty hard to be offended by random people. As someone said above, people have chips on their shoulders for a lot of different reasons. Maybe it's this new sense of entitlement that I have attained coming to Yale or maybe it's the fact that we are seriously talking about biking here (which is pretty far down my list of concerns in life), but I really could not be less concerned about someone heckling me. Most importantly, I haven't heard anyone yell at me yet on the ride. This could be selective deafness, or it maybe it just means that no one is actually yelling at me. Either way, heckle away. I know the comments about my loud tights/shorts are just envy!

As incoming captain, I also want to encourage everyone from the SG ride to make it out to the Saturday Yale Guilford rides this fall. We are hoping to get many of the competitive triathletes to come try the cycling team this year. Based upon the dominance seen on the college scene this year, these triathletes often have great fitness, but would greatly benefit from a controlled introduction to group riding. The fall rides are MUCH less intense than SG, but would be a good time for everyone to start building base (or whatever) for next season and a great time to share your enthusiasm for riding with the noobs to get them hooked. The Zane's guys, Hacker, Guido and many more, regularly come out for these rides and I hope we can keep the numbers high again this season.

Lastly, Eric has been an awesome captain for us this year, I am sure I will realize this more and more as I try to take over for him this year.

i give yale eric credit for posting under his name and owning what he says, even though i think he is misguided more often than not. the rest of you anon folks are cowards.

i'm with rondo: people need thick skin in cycling and in life. the tuesday ride isn't a fun ride, it's a "race ride", whatever that is, and it's even in the name of the blog.

if you don't like people on the ride, or you find the yelling, the name-calling, the douchebagerry, the egos, the attitudes, etc, here is your solution: stay home.

the ride has been like this for years, as anyone who has done it can attest, as can anyone who goes back are reads the blog. one could debate whether this is "right" or "wrong", whether this is good for cycling as a sport or whether it discourages new riders, etc. the fact remains, however, that the ride continues to exist in it's current form, so as an adult, each rider can decide whether or not he/she wants to participate.

if you don't like the ride or the riders find another group, or stay home, but don't show up and then complain that people weren't nice to you. the only thing worse than that is posting vitriolic rants on an internet blog about the ride where you make disdainful, malevolent remarks about individual riders but then fail to identify yourself.
