A running account of the "race without an entry fee"..... The Tuesday night ride

Tuesday the 20th

Just when you thought it was safe to be up front...

The ride today was interesting with a bunch of new faces rolling up. Humble pie was on the menu as a lot of usually strong SG riders were thrown to the gutter and forced to watch as strong guys from afar drove this weeks ride right out of sight.

It started with 3 or 4 guys from Central Wheel driving the early pace. Throw in the locals looking to avoid the potholes and it was fast from the start. A split nearly happened early on but the Devils Gear guys, also with some new faces present, kept it together. The two teams would go back and forth pushing the pace all the while with Eric Merril doing a good job of CameraMan and staying mostly in front of the action. Props also to Chris C, Hacker, VQ Rob and Guido who also managed to contribute to the pace making.

Past the light on route 68, Tim Ratta and the Central Wheel crew kept it hot. Also up at the front was Aidan Charles. Later on past the chicane, two riders from CCB moved up to the front and were riding hard. It was probably the most amount of horsepower at the front of the SG ride for quite a long time. It was only a matter of time before a split happened and sure enough, in the run up to the sprint on Rienhard, a crew of 15-18 rolled off the front and never looked back. Congrats to Little T for being unfazed by the visitors and snagging the sprint there.

Aidan, Mike McG, the CCB guys, Ratta, Guido, and a couple of others kept it fast in the "A" group, while Dillon P, Gregg F, John Gregory and others kept it going in the "B" group. The 2 groups were stopped at consecutive red lights within viewing distance in the center of Cheshire, but Group A, in proper fashion, rolled off first and never looked back.

Leave a comment about the rest of the ride if you were blessed to be part of that. Back in the Killer B's, Dillon P hit the finish line first.

Hopefully the Central Wheels, the Russians, and Aidan Chuckster will make it a weekly habit.

Killer Ride!

Hunter, you rode like a mentally disabled fudgepacker, was'up? Don't tell me you have HIV or I will feel awful cause you are actually a nice guy. Expect to see you toughguys in the results next month????

for the new people.were can we see the course or a map.were riding chasing the second group made a wrong turn and got lost .and by the way love the impolite attitude of some rides ...bad attitude doesn't make you fitter make you look !@#$%^

Anonymous said...

Hunter what ride were you on I think you need to get glasses!

Anonymous said...

A = the pack
B = the dropped

All I can say is that the "A" group never let up once on RT-10. It was a consistently hard effort all night. Kudu’s once again to skeleton boy and one leg mike for pushing the pace as well.

To Anon who is complaining about this ride being impolite let me say this. Anyone is welcome on this ride but be prepared to ride hard and yes, get yelled at if you do something stupid. You need to have thick skin to ride this ride and if you are concerned that some people are impolite, maybe this ride is not for you.

been racing for years, doing something stupid is no mi matter and meaning the ride is famous for the stuck up attitude.

Hunter P said...

Anon#1 - sorry to let you down. 50 hard miles before 6pm did me in i guess.
Anon#2 - "File and Folder". But thanks for riding with us all the same
Anon#3 - Don't look at me for this week... If something needs clarification. Speak up. Otherwise, stop complaining.

maps:
the Tuesday ride is on mapmyride

there is another map that has the main street names highlighted which might help to follow the blog report, find it here:

www.yale.edu/cycling/maps/tuesday_final.gif

also, there is a good chance the Tuesday ride might take a longer loop (+10 miles) during the weeks with longer daylight (June-July), the map is here:

www.yale.edu/cycling/maps/sunday_ride_final.gif

to anon:
I've been riding this ride for 3 years, I've been yelled at for going too slow, for going too fast, for doing stupid things, for doing not-so-stupid things. It's just part of this ride and I never took it personal.
If folks smile at you you know they are just not riding hard enough...

Shit, I get yelled at even when I'm not on the ride! Buck up, Anon.

Anonymous said...

Yep, Guido said it best. Nearly everyone is edgy and needs to be riding their best with the high pace and open roads. It's all about learning and not taking the ride and each other too seriously.

The roll through Cheshire down to the park was the usual with a fast paceline and finish. I give the "win" to McGinley but it was hard to tell for sure. He had a sheepish grin.

Baahhhh!

I hear McGinley prefers Waterbury sheep.

On second thought, those guys look crazy...I'm deporting them home.

Ben SHUT UP

Anonymous said...

How the hell can a ride be stuck up? This is not your grandmothers ride and boys with small peckers are not welcome. So anon I am sure you won't be back.

Anonymous said...

What about Builder Pete? I did some work. "Can't we all just get along."

Anonymous said...

hey everybody--HTFU and ride the rough sections of road straight and fast. all this swerving to avoid bumpy pavement and coasting or soft-pedaling is dangerous, stupid, and unnecessary. weak sauce!

Anonymous said...

Anon is dead on about the TNWC. The ride is "stuck up". You have to work to be accepted by "the ride" and if you do something silly, it's only going to take you that much longer.

It's a tribe mentality, strangers can't just show up and fit in.

For those of you newer to the ride here are some suggestions for breaking into the clique:
1) Stay with Mike McGin down rte 10 - AND TAKE A PULL AT THE FRONT
2) Beat Little T at the Stop & Shop Sprint.
3) Get yelled at by Rondo (everyone gets yelled at by Rondo at least once - it's like a bonding thing).

Anonymous said...

the "strangers" have been ruling the ride in 2010.... Its the local \ regulars that suck.

So who gives a F%ck about snobbery

Anonymous said...

ups open can of worms...I have been many times at the ride and WILL BE BACK.for many more I like the pace so see ya on tuesday.just sharing some general tougths for some of the rides.

Anonymous said...

here's my question to newbies and veterans alike: what's with the people who don't know how to ride in a rotating paceline who come to the front and foul up the rhythm and speed? or the people who can barely keep the pace in the draft and then basically situp when it's their turn to pull? where i come from, if you lack the knowledge of how to ride properly in a group or the strength to take some real pulls, you've got no business at the front.

Anonymous said...

I just want to give props to mike for one hell of a pull that killed me. Tore my legs off. Had nothing left when he stood up and rode off. More riding like that and less bitching. Please?

Mahoney

Anonymous said...

Why Simon, did you mother drop you on your head when you were a baby? I get up up there just to break your balls.

Rondo said...

Mahoney is that the first time you got dropped or the second time. Just a little etiquette lesson you dont get in the mix after you have been dropped and take a shot cut. You sit at the back and bow your head in shame.

Anonymous said...

HEY, Maloney, silent? steve, simon and yes you Rondo...SHUT THE FUCK UP!!! You are all idiots, the ride will sort itself out, there is no need to talk about this "etiquite" Hope to see some of you in the results of races!!

Anonymous said...

And you Guido...you are strong at time trialing but untill you have raced, not ridden group rides, for at least 5 years, shut the fuck up and ride the ride and race and learn.

Anonymous said...

This is great! Lessons in etiquette from Ron are like lessons in tolerance from Hitler lol

Happy Birthday Crowell !!!
Have a great day!!

Robyn and Ron Fantano

Dillon P. said...

What the heck was that!!?? We're all tearing each-other new ones and then some love and hugs comment from Robyn??? I'm crying over here. I love you all so much.

Rondo said...

Bold words from an ANON. If I were a betting man I would say you were in the LAUGHING group. That would be the "B" group.

Ben said...

Wow, there's a lot of Anon's that have a lot to say. Why don't you say who you are before you go complaining like a soiled-diaper wearing, baby? I mean seriously? How the hell can anyone --other than Ron -- attack Guido for not racing long enough? His results speak for quite clearly: He's become a solid crit racer. Plus, he has such a nice accent.

Don't worry, Ron. I love you, too. I mean, if you weren't married I wouldn't be surprised.

Jk, Robyn.

Anonymous said...

All,
Be happy that you can all ride hard and then talk shit after the ride. I'm nursing some back problems and have not been riding hard (or racing) for the first time in 25 years.
So,shut the fuck up and ride your bikes...

Big John

PS: I agree with Simon's comments

Hunter P said...

i have been wondering where Tall John has been.

Feel Better John. Hope to see you out here soon.

dear anon: don't hate on guido, he's a solid rider, a solid character, he works during the ride, and most importantly, he doesn't post anonymous complaints directed at specific people later.

race results? what about yours? oh, wait, no one knows who you are. but it doesn't matter if your a 1 or a 4--if you ride like a douche then you are a douche. etiquette does exist in cycling for a number of reasons, not the least of which is safety on group rides. if you crash out the entire ride cause you're being macho and can't keep a 28-30mph pace when it's your turn to pull so you sit up...that's a lot of other people you threaten cause you want to make the ride your own personal dick-measuring contest.

--simon

Anonymous said...

who is Simon? I dont see him in "the Cast"

Anonymous said...

i gotta agree with what simon just said about guido. he's a strong rider and a great guy.

and if rondo yells at you, it's probably cause you did something stupid which you shouldn't do again (it's happened to me and was deserved).
