A running account of the "race without an entry fee"..... The Tuesday night ride

Tuesday the 3rd

Ride gets disorderly - S.W.A.T. team is called in

It happens every year... Sometimes twice... Our welcome in the fair village of Cheshire wears thin and the PoPo steps up to the civic plate... But more on that later....

There was about 45-50 guys or so on the ride tonight. Turning off RT10, Guido went straight to work by distancing himself from the others... Chris C and Hunter P kept tempo on his 50 yard gap. then Eric M came rifling by & both Chris C & Hunter P jumped on.

Eric caught Guido pretty quickly and by the turn onto Mount Sanford the 4 went to work together. The pace was pretty decent in the break and back in the field. Other Stage 1 riders, Joe K, Tall John.... All were keeping it close but the gap went up to about 7 seconds. Coming up to the turn onto Mountain, the field had gone turbo and single file, lead by Hacker and Tall John... The catch happened just as the corner came up. There was oncoming traffic that slowed all but the front group which was made up of the break and the strong men chasing.

Hacker and Hunter P took advantage of the split on the opening hill of Mountain Rd and the others latched on. By the time the ride came thru the stop sign for Higgans there was a pretty massive split in the field. Lets see if can name all the guys up front... Tho it was pretty much the crew you'd expect.

Guido \ Todd H \ Chris C \ Mike McG \ Hunter P \ Eric M \ Jesse from Keltic \ Tall John \ Mason \ Hacker \ Joe K \ Chris B \ Julio? \ Kyle F \ a CCB rider who we think is Yahor Buben .... Who else??? Probably missing some guys from that list. Sorry for that. The light at West Main was of course red and it all came together.

Onto Moss farms where Kyle K went off on his own. He held a 7 or 8 second gap as Hacker & others gave a slight chase... Nothing too crazy though. Kyle kept the gap until the turn onto jarvis where some traffic issues let Hacker and someone else (!?) slide up to to him. Todd H and Little T led the charge to bring them back on the ramp up to Marion and by the corner all was together. A couple of guys were able to use the cover to roll off the front, Tall John, Hunter P and Greg from Keltic. Those 3 covered the length of Marion together but as they entered the industrial park, the field was all sewed up.

The CCB rider, Hacker and a couple of others went to work with the pace and nearly split the field again thru the industrial park, but it stayed together all the way up to Reinhart. Mike McG was keeping it ticking along when Little T jumped out on the hill toward Schoolhouse. Hunter P jumped on and used the lead out to get to the sprint points corner first. That had strung things out a bit but going down towards Peck Ln the ride was together again. Nothing unusual for the next few miles. The ride was hit with a stiff headwind on RT10 that kept the pace at an elderly 18 mph.

Here is where Kyle had another go off the front but as and the field was coming up to the Cheshire Police department building, an officer was there to stop traffic and "pull over" the ride... Seems there was some complaints about bad pace line etiquette and down&dirty drafting tricks.... Either that or we were hogging the road... Regardless, the officer, as always, was pretty nice about it and simply requested we keep it to 2 abreast or else bikes would start to get impounded and sold off at government auction. After a background check on everyone showed that the fugitive, Anthony Parent, was not among us, we were released.

That kinda negated the Stop n Shop sprint, which Dillon P was squarely favored to take....

Nothing too exciting going back into Hamden... The finish was a bleak affair with someone getting to Shepard ave first. We arent really sure who. CCB was up there, Eric M and Rondo too. The real party was up on top of Shepard where Hunter P waited out all of Chris B's attacks and took the top o the hill sprint, with Gregg F from CCR coming in 3rd.

Great, classic ride... We will all have to concentrate on being a little more orderly it seems...

Rider of the week is the police officer on Rt. 10.

How many more reasons will smack you the face before you pull the ride off rt 10?

I love how when we plan solo rides or small group rides, we squarely avoid Rt10 like we would a person with SARS!

But when we have 60 guys "trying" to get along and the 5.0 breathing down our neck, we decide that rt10 is a good place to be.

I dont remember any time when 60 guys have made it to route 10, usually the pack dwindles down to about 30 guys.

It's called "pack-mentality" and it always prefers an audience.DUH

That last one was funny mr anon

Mr. Hunter: even if I wasn't recovering my third case of emphysema of the year, I still wouldn't be caught dead at your ride. This is my currently adopted platform: (1) I'm rumered to be the Petits' third kidnapper (too soon?) (2)the race with an entry fee and at E. Hartford directly conflicts and the only cops who show up are those who help us into ambulances(3) we at www.roadielawyer.com challenge you at www.sleepinggiantirade.com to a dance off.

Brilliant!
The walk-off is on!
I have ordered, not one, not two, but 3 cases of Poppers... We are going large baby!

OK, now the shit will fly . Adin's watt meter toting fags have gone to far . They dare challenge the Tuesday ride with that pathetic excuse for a race . OK lets watch the cnns fags go to the front and block wowwww . I think they should come down to our ride and then we will go to there ride and see who fairs better . As far as the dance off we have the ace in the hole, Little T was a break dancer in Jersey back-in the day . He also has won his fair share of walk off's .

A-train adopts the following position:
Angry Ron sullies his reputation by claiming that Hunter's SGR --- this foul combination of red light attacks; the red light bridge-up, stop sign attacks; and the lets get 8 wide downhill on Route 10 and sit in for some arbitrary sprint --- can come close to matching the glory of whirling around tortilla-flat circles with millions of fans chanting your name. If I was the Cheshire PD I would give you guys all tickets for being lame.(except you Hunter --- you're actually quite highly functioning, (relatively speaking of course)) You all should come to E. Hartford and put us in our place. Rondo, come on up and make everyone hurt. And I will pay you $10 for each time that Unkert mentions you in his blog.

Quote of the week "watt-meter toting fag's". I need to use that some time. I agree with Rondo (as much as that hurts to say). I say we switch off at least once this year. Let the regulars who race E. Hartford come down hear for our ride and then the next week, we will go up there for their "race".

Great ride as usual.

I see alot of passion in the comments this week and I'm at a loss on trying to say something witty in response....

With that said, first I would like to say thankyou to Hunter P for bringing this blog alive, active and always interesting. I look forward to reading the blog, more so than riding the TWC. (Note to Self: Enroll in Rondo’s ediquet(?) class)
Second, since the TWC runs at such a high pace, riders that get into a break should all work together in the break, not attack each other.
Thirdly, Mr Hacker, for all his educational and professional achievements, should not take the first chicane corner at 35+ mph with a large truck anxiously waiting to proceed from the stop sign.
Why do certain riders (ie.. triathlete on the yellow bike) continue to take the turn onto route 10 by going far left in the oncoming lane before turning onto route 10? Eventually, someone will get hit!
And finally, who is that little green-guy on the ride. If he continues fighting people for a wheel, he is not going to make many friends, especially in this crowd.

If we all went to East Hartford, would that be considered a course change? Can we stand for the sprint? Just curious.

A train I think what you are trying to say in a long winded way is , I think my ride is better than your ride . If so then you are correct . I have done both and can matterafactly say it is CHOO CHOO true

Rider of the week goes to Bubble Boy Brian for his return to the peleton.

Is East Hartford east of Hartford or west of Manchester? I guess I'll just have to call the Cheshire police for directionsm, I'm sure they know.

Rondo -- I think it's great that you lend your name to Hunter's Sleeping Giant Ride. Really, Hunty and I, well we've talked about it over scotch, and boy does he get that sort of glowing mushy-drunk when the conversation turns to you. He tells me this ride he started would be nothing if you didn't didn't show up.
Anyway, right now, as I am typing this, I am my keyboard watt-meter shows 36W. Today is a rest day, so I really should be slowing it down --- or Aidan will tear me and my power profile a new heiney hole.
So with that in mind, I will attempt to be as non-confrontational as possible: Ron the only reason your ride is better than our race is that you're doing the ride, when you should be racing. We just need that Angry Ron spice of life in E Hartford. And that's why I CHOO-CHOO CHOOSE you as this week's fan favorite. See you next Tuesday. I'll block for you anytime.

no A Train you and I should be raceing on the weekends not on Tuesday !

This is so much fun!!!!

Anonymous said...

...A-Train is just pissed off because when he shows up at "Hunter's" weekly TWC, he gets his ass dropped

Anonymous said...

I respect you too much Angry Ron to try to persuade you any further. But just read this http://www.timunkert.com/Tuesdaynightpics.html
and tell me if I'm not wrong at being right.

A train I see 5 photos of a chubby CTU I'm not that impressed .

Unkert does look like he's got a little pudge pudge in those shots doesnt he? How does Aiden let that get up the road alone? Guess he's psycho strong.

Anonymous said...

or Adien is Psyco Slow.......hehehe

Anonymous said...

I think he has retard strength .

Anonymous said...

com'on now. Surely Aiden deserves props for putting up paper for training race.

Anonymous said...

When you have 50% of the competitive cycling community in Connecticut paying you $200 a month to try and make them retard strong, a lil' paper for a training race is a drop in the bucket.

O.k., I know I'm not going to make new friends with this (and maybe put off the few I have????) but why not battling for suffer glory in a time trial and see who has the stronger riders, the SG ride or that entry-fee-thing somewhere up north????

Just bringing this up as there is a time trial series each Wednesday 6.30 PM run by the Laurel club from Durham down to Guilford.

It doesn't interfere with either Tuesday ride/race so that's a plus. One could average the five fastest times for each group or see whoever hits the 30 mph avg first.

Of course, the group that loses will claim it did so because their respective Tuesday ride was too hard but we leave that to be discussed at the blogosphere...

Ron, I know deep inside you'd love that!
