A running account of the "race without an entry fee"..... The Tuesday night ride

Tuesday the 6th

The Living Legend; Luigi Delbuono stops by for a beer and a spin

Not much time for a post today guys. Busy week around here....

It was a great ride, really fast. Hunter P clocked in one of his highest average wattage totals for the throwdown. And he wasn't even up front that much.

And it was great to see Luigi and John Elengo on the same mile of road! Rumors abound of a return of Gruppo Sportivo Europeo to the NRC curcuit!

The ride started decently quick. Chris C took off pretty early past route 10 and was joined by Guido. They had a gap coming up to South Brooksvale Rd. They slowed up a bit and let Hunter P, and Eric M, who were chasing, catch on.

The 4 worked well together, and got a decent gap right away. But then things went ballistic in the Peleton with Chris Jones and Mike McG moving up. the gap fell apart in a cocaine blink and by the first riser on Mountain rd, the 4 were done. The front of the peleton didnt stop for nothing and nearly tore a gap into the field. Mike McG, Jones, Rondo, Hacker, Matt (?!) from Stage one, Todd H... All of em drilling it past Higgans Rd. Chris C was good enough to jump across and his efforts, plus, Little T's kept things together. There was a little too much star power in the front group to work it smoothly anyway.

Onto Moss Farms Chris B from CCR drilled it, and with Matt from Empire, Hacker, and other Stage 1 guys keeping it going the pace was fast.

Onto the Chicane where Jones sailed to the front and kept it quick. Past that Tall John was lighting it up and riding strong and it was super fast going into the industrial park area. Some reports have as many as 10-15 guys getting flicked off the back from Moss farms to Rienhard.

So speed was high the entire time and the only effort that led to guys off the front was Mike McG and Hacker going up the hill before the turn onto Rienhard. Little T jumped on the Rienhard hill to bridge the gap. He took Hunter P and Eric M with him. Mike got to the corner first, and everyone was pretty much together going down Schoolhouse.

Turning back onto RT 10, Hacker and Chris C had a gap that they drilled going past Cheshire Park. The tail wind helped em out a bit. But by Norton School, all was together again. There was some jocking for the Stop n Shop sprint. Little T jumped from 7 or 8 bikes back and the only ones that went with him were Hunter P and Hacker. Little T got that one pretty easy.

It was really fast going thru town and into Hamden. No one tried anything tricksy, and coming into the finale, some guys got caught out in the front too early, Tall John, Hunter P and Eric M.

One of the Keltic riders ( greg ? ) was seen out of the saddle with less than a kilo to go and as a result, the entire team must be relegated from any finishes. The strong trio of Hacker, Mike McG, and Little T found themselves in the right place and we are giving Little T the win for this one.

Sorry for the brevity, great ride!

Excuse my ignorance... but you guys can't get out of the saddle w/o some sort of penalty? What's that all about?

In order to maintain safety during the final 1\2 mile of so, no out of the saddle riding. If you're going to sprint out of the saddle, do it as an attack leading up to the final mile. (yea right)

The best prize for the night was one of the cheshire cycle crew (tall guy)pulling out of the sleeping giant parking lot with the best chain ring mark on his calf that I have ever seen. I think I counted all 53 teeth.

Fun, fast ride last night. Thanks!

I saw the Keltic rider Greg stand at the end of the ride. That guy seems to start more trouble than he is worth!! I vote we kick his ass next week!!
Crowell I need a litte forplay before I go all the way.

Little T wasn't even involved in the finish was he? As I saw it, Matt from Empire got nipped at the line by Hacker.

And Yeah! Let's kick that guy's ass!

Rider of the week goes to a very fast Hunter P.

A few points:
- Rider of the week was Luigi Delbuono!!! Where is the respect for this elder statesman? He didn't even get a mention in the race report and that is sad.....
- A Yale guy (Hacker?) also stood up near the end. If it indeed was Prof. Hacker, then he should be relegated to the rear.
- I get confused on the race report with who the hell is Chris C (Chapleau or Crowell) and was he really with Hacker on the attack on Route 10 past the park?
- I counted 46 teeth on that guy' calve (he must be a junior!)
- When will we be blessed wit the return of Blondie?
- Thankyou Cheshire cycling guys for putting the TWC story out every week !

and....FU Rondo

We love Elder Statesmen and the post has been edited to reflect that. Thank you for bringing out the omission of L.D. We made a mistake in haste.

Chris C means Chris Crowell.

Hacker has had 25 points deducted from his yearly total. He still sits comfortably in first tho.

Nice edit with a mention of Luigi and John Elegno.

And could it be that the other Chris C from Stage 1 (Chris Chapleau with the orange Cannondale) is the rider that is named Matt(?) from Stage 1?

Anonymous said...

.....and where is the mention of that young lady with the tight white pants and the red top that scampered in front of the peleton when we waited for the light at the Notch store?

Signed,
Peter Johnson

Pete I'm forwarding your post to you know who. For this I'm sure you won't be let to play for at least two weeks

Anonymous said...

No I was not with hacker on the RT-10 attack but it sounded good so why correct it. The chick who walked by at the Notch is the rider of the week.

The ride used to go back to SG and a sprint occured on Rt 10 at the bridge. The sprint proved too dangerous, numerous crashes. So it was decided to turn right onto Shepard Ave across from EnChilada restaurant and then sprint to the top of the hill. Too hard?

Now we are back to sprinting on Rt 10, only a different place. What safety?

Problem is that a bunch of weekend race no-hopers think the Tuesday night race should be a "race without and entry fee" and not a strong training ride. Save the win for the weekend.

Can we please, for once get this straight??? THERE IS NO SPRINTING AT THE END OF THIS RIDE!!!!!!!!!!!! People, you have 20 or so miles to tear your legs off. Nothing gets to me more aggrivated than seeing guys that have not been at the front all afternoon, then surge to front in the last 1/2 mile sprinting like they are going to win a stage at the tour. Ride hard for the entire ride, then stay in the saddle for the last 1/2 mile and go as hard as you can. NO STANDING & NO SPRINTING! IT'S A TRAINING RIDE FOR CHRIST SAKE!!!!!!

There are also women on this ride, Chris C. Please be politically correct in your next comment or else....

Hey all,
OK, where to start...
First off, great ride! I had an average of 289 watts, and that includes my 25-30 miles of hard endurance\tempo riding before SG. Usually it is around 270-274. Still, thats apples to oranges when you look at Tour of Georgia riders needing to crank out 325+ for 2 hours at a time & normal cruising is 285+.

I am all for a return to going up Shepard Ave for "thefinish". Can we see a show of hands? If a few others agree, i will do it next week instead of "riding the wave" to the imaginary finish line.

You are prolly right about Chapleau being the rider. Sorry. All you guys look and ride pretty much the same.

Peter, her (the chick) name is Christy, she works at Scooples. Tho she is a biscuit older than the legal driving age. I'm sure she could use a ride to the prom this weekend... I'll put in a good word.

Does anyone know Luigi's email? I would love to get his comments? Or at least let him know about this messed up forum we keep where apparently anything goes.

Lastly, that was a joke about Hacker's point total... There is no running point total.(at least i dont think so)

Good ride! I vote no to the turn up Shepperd solely because I weigh 200lbs and up hill finishes and I get along like Campy and Shimano! Other than that I think it's a good idea.

If any one wants to use the demo set of Zipp 404's we have at the shop let me know. They worked for me! Very fast!

Sprinting at te end is extremely dangerous, and so is turning onto route 10. We stopped the "sprint" because we really care about each other. (only men in spandex can say that)

Hunter,
Please pay Christy to cross in front of the bunch this week. A week ago, I had a blood test, which included checking testosterone, it was low. But after seeing the "ice-cream" gal, I know the level must now be normal.

Yesterday, I Emailed John Elengo in order to get Luigi on the site or for him to provide his Email.....let's be patient.

Honey you must be on of those delicate flowers that don't swear , shit , or dear I say fart . If you in anyway associate with any of the cretins on the ride I'm sure that's not the first nor last time you will hear or read the word FUCKIN

Luigi is not into e-mail, I have been referred to this blog.

Luigi is driven by competition (on closed roads) and would enjoy a sprint under any conditions. He could certainly teach you how to get rid of others in a tight sprint but these methods are not necessarily appropriate for Route 10 (and perhaps not when an official is watching).

I agree with the posting that Tuesday night should be a strong training ride and not a “race without an entry fee”. That statement should be changed or eliminated from the intro of this blog as it doesn’t help matters.

There is a place for sprinting but not on Route 10 nor the more heavily traveled back roads. In the past we had a place designated for an intermediate sprint. It was a training sprint and whether or not you won wasn’t the object, certainly you tried. It tested your form and gave you sprinting experience. It was done in a relatively safe area. For example, the sprint might finish in front of Northeast Utilities on E. Johnson Ave. (the road along I-84 at the top of the ride) where the lane is both wide and less traveled.

Also, there was a time when the ride went strong, but not as aggressively as some nights, for about the first half and then it became “open.” This allowed less experienced riders to gain it and also to receive some coaching in the process. (It also probably helped boost the team sponsors’ bike sales.) A couple of weeks ago, an interested, reasonably fit and skilled, 43 year old joined in hoping to join a group ride. He started near the back and was blown away after a few miles. I picked him up and tried to encourage him but unfortunately, he hasn’t come back. He had perhaps unwisely chosen the “mother of all groups.”

Nice to hear from John Elengo
Hope you are doing well.

I had to laugh at your comment about our friend Luigi.."Luigi is not into email" This is John's eloquent way of paraphrasing what Luigi would actually say about email and computers in general... "F@ck computers!! I have no time for that sh*t"!!!

The ride always was the "Mother of all group rides" and as Chris C said "anyone can join the fun on tuesday nights, just be prepaired to throw-up your lunch". Sounds like that tradition along with the route will always remain. I hope you guys dont mind me chiming in, this is working wonders for regaining my cycling mentality.

Looking forward to keeping my lunch down.

My pre pride advice to keep my lunch down is to eat 2 lunches, and one consisting of a peanut butter and crack sandwich. Exactly how old is a biscuit????

"I Could ride my bike with no handle bars, handle bars".

We Should change the route to something harder with more hills.THIS COURSE IS FOR CHUMPS!!!!!!!!!!!

not enough testosterone - I think it is eating the brain cells of each and every one of you. Haven't you noticed that yet? wow

You mean perposterone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is perposterious amounts of testosterone.

I agree this course is kinda lame we should try something NEW!!!!!!!!!!!!

...so next Tuesday, you guys should show up a the TWC and then take another route. have fun.
