A running account of the "race without an entry fee"..... The Tuesday night ride

Tuesday the 5th

Riding..... Not hiding...... from the rain

The rain kept the field down to about 20 or so guys tonight. But it seemed everyone was happy to be out on their bikes. Right off the bat, turning off route 10, Chris B from CCR came straight out and set a really stiff pace. Dillon P, Hunter P and Eric M were on him and the ride got rolling long. Chris soon turned over the reins to Rondo and Mike McG. The small crowd out tonight meant that it was going to be a spirited ride. No hiding today….

The front of the ride onto Mountain Rd. was controlled by the Medics, a Devils Gear rider, and Julio L. Midway thru Mountain Rd, there was a nice rotating group of 7 or so, ready to share the work load.

The field met up with Tall John and Chris C at the light on route 68. Onto Moss farms, Rondo early on kept up the pace and then turned it over to CT Coast Ben and a Devils Gear rider ( Jefferey Weaver ?). All in all, everyone was together for most of Moss Farms. Tall John found a chance to sneak off the front before the chicane and we went into chase mode. Mike McG was up there making sure everyone paid attention. Traffic turning onto Jarvis St slowed things down a little and that meant that everyone was together for the climb up to Marion Ave. Mike McG, Hunter P, Todd H and Eric M drove the pace up and past the corner, but no one was willing to attack and so it stayed all a bunch into the industrial park. In the industrial park, there were a few guys doing most of the work. Tall John and the Medics were up there predominately. Turning onto West Johnson, Eric M flatted and a couple guys held back to wait for him. Mike, Ron, Chris C and a couple of others. The group that forged ahead was down to about 12-14, and they slowly ramped up the pace again toward reinhart. Chris B came again up to the front and was setting a really hard pace thru the peck lane intersection and up the hill before the turn onto Reinhard. He actually just rode off the front in pursuit of the sprint. Behind him the rest of the group was sorting things out Julio L was looking to get a good position. Tall John was at the front of the chase. CT Coast Ben and John Gregory were up there too. Hunter P jumped from the back of the group, and set out to gun down Chris, who by this time had a solid 50-60 yard gap going on the field. Hunter P, with Julio L on board, needed the whole length of the road to close the gap, but ended up coming around Chris with 40 yards or so left before the Schoolhouse corner. Down the backside Tall John jumped hard into TT mode and Chris B tried to follow him. But by the turn onto Peck, it was all pretty much together.

Meanwhile, behind, as Eric was changing his tire, Chris C had gotten taken out by Greg Cimino while he was making a U turn back to Eric. The 2 guys went down hard. Chris C was deemed ok, his new bike was not too badly damaged. He limped back to his car at Stop n Shop. Greg was a little worse off, and needed to wait for a car ride pick up. We need confirmation that he is in the hospital right now. Mike and Rondo waited with him. Chris C says don’t ride your new bike in the rain, only bad things happen.

Up ahead, the front of the ride was turning a nice gear past Cheshire Park. Ct Coast Ben, Todd H and Tall John were setting a good tempo. A couple of lights slowed things down but heading up to Stop n Shop, Chris B was again at it, trying to ride off the front. This time he had a couple of guys with him. A devils gear rider ( who had taken a shortcut to be up front ) and BlingBling Maison. Chris was on his way to collecting the stop n shop prize when the light turned red, so everyone sat up. But Chris had it in the bag.

A couple of riders turned off in Cheshire, which meant that there were less guys to drill it back home. Tall John again tried to sneak off the front, but was marked this time. Todd H was up there, Julio L, Elder Foley, and Entry level Chris ( on a Scott ) was up there too. John Gregory took everyone into the final 200 meters, along with Tall John, but there was no duking it out to the bitter end this day.

A good ride, had it not been for the unknown accidents and incidents. Lets hope for better skies and better fortune next week.

Tuesday the 28th

The sexiest ride of the year.... And the TWC goes to a "No Drop" policy !?

Everyone was out to enjoy the heat tonight... And there were plenty of guys to bring the heat. Probably close to 60 guys out for the ride.

Right from the getgo, after turning off 10, a helmetless rider in a Medics jersey took off. Quick to jump on his wheel was a few guys... Dillon P, Greg Ciocci, Todd H (?) and a couple others. After that Thomas B(speckled) on a Storck took over the pace aided by the 27 yalies that were out. Actually it was probably only 5... 6 if you count Alumni Luekens. That got the ride going pretty good as the field headed toward Mountain rd. The pace was enough to get a few small gaps going but traffic turning onto Mountain Rd slowed it all back together. Onto mountain rd where Luekens kept the pace up along with a Yalie, Todd H, Maison from CCR, and a couple of others. A gap formed under the pace making of Luekens and after the initial riser, the group didn’t slow… Hunter P led the field up behind and at the top Guido jumped across the gap. The group took advantage of some lackluster chasing and the gap went up to a solid handful of seconds. Going past Higgans and up the risers, a chase group went off the front led by Adam from yale. Things got messy behind him as gaps were opening up all over the place. As the peleton drove up the inclines there, Chris C sewed up a lot of holes with Hunter P in tow, giving him the chance to jump across and it was all together again… Toward the end of Mountain Rd. another gap formed but a couple of guys were up there to cover it… Rondo, Richard Sachs Chris and others.

Onto Moss Farms where again the Yalies were up front setting a good tempo into the wind. Thomas B and Hunter P were up there as well. Heading up to the Chicane, Tall John snuck off and drilled it. He got a good jump on the hill as the rest were sorting themselves out behind. Craig jumped on the hill along with a yalie, Hunter P and Todd H. The 4 caught John and the group started working together. The rest of the ride was a few seconds back, being led by Eric M and the rest of the Yale riders.

Just as everyone was getting into the industrial park it was all back together again. Things calmed down there a bit but once the turn onto West Johnson was made, guys were again stomping. As the ride started up toward Reinhardt, there were a few guys eager to separate themselves from the rest… Crazy Chris, Greg C, Julio L, Chris B, Todd H. The group had a couple of seconds as guys like Hunter P, Craig L, Guido etc. were sorting themselves out for the sprint. Craig looked to be ready to jump across at the base of the hill. Mike McG came up with proper speed and was able to charge thru the front pretty easy on his way to first thru the corner. Going hard from that corner was Chris b and Hunter P, who along, with Crazy Chris and tall John, had a small gap heading up Peck Ln. That fell apart as Mike McG was bringing the field up behind. The rest of the way to Route 10 and heading up past Cheshire Park was uneventful…

The stop and shop sprint was null due to a police car stopped on the side of the road…. And traffic was heavy moving thru town… Once past it all, there were plenty of guys willing to hit the headwind. Peter P, Kyle F, Eric M, Adam from yale, etc… Tall John tried again to sneak away from everyone with a few K to go, but that got chased properly and the pace was then going good. Heading into the finale… Or what is just turning out to be a test of who’s timing is the most fortunate, Mike and Ron drove it hard with Eric M right behind. Eric came over the top with about 400 meters to go to Shepard Ave. Hunter P was right behind and was able to pass Eric with 100 meters or so to go… Just as Guido was also closing fast… A good fast finish with out any sprinting…. The true definition of anticlimactic…

A good ride despite the pacing hiccups…

Tuesday the 21st

The ride doesn’t scare anyone but apparently the rain does…..

Only a few guys out tonight....

Peter on a Trek
Gregg F
Dillon P
Hunter P
Richards Sachs Chris
Chris Butler
Peter K
Entry level Chris ( on a Scott )
Chris C
Ken just Ken
Guido

There were some BattenKILLED legs out there with Guido and Chris C taking it easy today. But that didn’t stop Guido from tearing it up early on. Dillon P was also going good. Chris B lead everyone just about the whole way down Mountain Rd….. Splitting the field…. But we waited at the light. Dillon took off on the chicane, Guido followed and then left off the front alone… The rest chased him down eventually in the industrial park. Butler was again charging hard up to Rienhard, Ken just Ken jumped up for the sprint. Hunter P tracked him down. Hunter kept up the attack on Peck. Guido and Ken brought him back.

Chris B again drove it up to Stop and Shop…. Ken just Ken and R.S.Chris gave chase but no one came around him. Hunter P attacked hard in the final mile and a half. Guido chased him down along with Chris B. Ken just Ken also made the gap. The 4 rolled in a few seconds ahead of the rest….

All in all a pretty fun ride.

Tuesday the 14

No one is scared of the Tuesday night ride anymore…..

Another solid group out for the ride tonight. New face starting to become regulars for the TWC….

The ride got started slowly once off route 10 but two yalies slipped away with plans to ride by themselves the whole night. Traffic on corner #2 of the ride slowed the group up and the 2 were out of sight till they relized they missed a turn up the road and had to back track….

Dillon P was quick to test out the rigidity of his new Scott and took off the front alone. Behind, the pace was ok. Maison & Joe P from CCR and setting tempo heading into the first section of ‘pave.

On Mount Sanford Rd Dillon was caught as Adam from Yale ramped it up pretty good. Then on South Brooksvale leading up to Mountain Rd Maison found himself off the front with Hunter P. The two worked it for a little bit but then sat up on Mountain as Matt from Devils gear and Guido powered up the first hills on Mountain rd. The two kept it motoring along after the hills and fond themselves with a bit a gap that they went to work on. By the second set of risers , Yale Adam, Greg C from Keltic, Eric M, Peter P, Lawrence M on the white Bianchi, a Yale guy on a Parlee (?), and others were bringing it hard. The 2 were caught and for the rest of Mountain rd everyone was together and working well to keep the speed up.

Onto Moss Farms where the Yalie on a Parlee, Adam and Eric M kept the pace high initially but then calmed down for the run into the chicane.

Into the chicane there were a lot of guys at attention ready to go as Peter P led everyone thru. Little T, feeling no ill effects from the long day he already put in on the bike before the ride, jumped hard from 7 bikes back and lead everyone up and thru with the gap he created. Dillon P was quick to respond and was chasing at the front along with others… (Chris C, Hunter P) Eric M took a late dig to try to close the gap to T but as the road flattened out on Marion, riders were single file…. But all together.

Into the industrial park where Kyle F and TriGuy on a Trek kept the pace high. Guido was up there too looking antsy. Onto West Johnson where the pace went up due simply to a solid group of guys setting a stiff pace. There were too many to mention, but no doubt Adam up at the front along with other Yalies kept things motoring. Too bad these guys are students….Summer classes anyone? As the corner to Reinhard neared, There was a group of 10 or so with the position and the legs to get ready for the charge up the hill. Chris C, Eric M, Crazy Chris, Guido, Greg Ciocci, Peter P, the yalies, Maison, Dave from Stage 1 (?). Chris Butler from CCR had moved up and thru and was there. Also we think we spotted Julio L from Stage 1. Great to see him back on the ride. Right behind this group there was others lurking. Little T, Hunter P and Rondo amoung them. Sure enough there were quite a few that jumped at the base of the hill for the sprint. Little T had waited to jump a little longer than usual thanks to the bodies in front of him. But when he did he had Hunter P straight on his wheel. The 2 quickly darted thru traffic and only had to pass Eric M and Crazy Chris, who were fighting off sharks with laser beams, thrashing their bikes to get speed out of them. Hunter P came along side and eventually passed Little T, now 156 miles into day ( or something like that ). Hunter got to the corner first but somehow it seems Little T took the corner first. So we’re calling it a tie. On the backside Crazy Chris and Eric were ready to keep it up and rolled off the front with Hunter P. But by Peck lane everyone was back together…. One day someone will jump hard here and keep a gap to the end.

The pace back to Route 10 was good. Hunter P lead all up thru the next sector of ’pave. Gregg F & Maison from CCR was up there too. Getting closer to RT 10, Rondo, no doubt tipped off by his crooked Italian-leaning informants deep in the Cheshire PD advised everyone to behave for the next bit. Sure enough, there was a squad car up the road a ways pulling out in front of the ride. It looks like he was answering a call tho and took off never to be seen again. We guess there was something happening in town that was more urgent than the bubble boys flaunting their manhood indecently. Amongst the drama, Chris B, who bows to no lawman, was gassing it off the front with a couple of others in tow. No doubt seeking revenge for being denied on Reinhard, Chris was gonna one-man-army it out to the Stop and Sprint Shop.
Despite some huge pacing on the hill going past Cheshire Park by guys like Guido, Adam and Peter P Chris was leading his small group with a bit of a gap. Approaching the hill guys were all over the place. Craig L jumped late from way back. Little T, now on kilometer 270, jumped along him. But it was too late as Chris narrowly held on to be the first of the hill. Great job Chris! Impressive…..

The rest of the ride was pretty uneventful. Kyle F and Greg Ciocci were gunning it. Stage one and Medic riders Brian K and Eric M as well. Little T and Hunter P nearly caused a pile up…. Way to go guys… Heading into the finale, Rondo, Little T, Hunter P, Eric M all took their last solid pulls a ways from the end leaving Maison Greg C and Guido jetting off alone. Guido is tough to beat in this one and was able to stay out in front going past the Shepard Ave.

All in all, a pretty good ride!

Tuesday the 7th

Seems like it was a bye week

Revenge of winter tonight as a light crowd filed outta the parking lot nice and neatly and freshly
relieved. Good to see new Dad-Dillon P out there as well. Let's all hear it for the arrival of girl Cadence May Pronovost! She will be truing up Zipps in no time at all.

The ride was greeted by a devilish crosswind that seemed to be a headwind the whole night. The pace was light heading into Cheshire... Maison, Dillon P and Guido were up there, ticking along. Eric M and Ciocci from keltic too. A weekend full of windy racing seemed to be putting the strong men in spin mode. Plus no show from Little T, Luekens, and Peter P.... And Crazy Chris got hit with a flat early on.... So there was some ponies missing.

The first serious action didnt happen till before Mountain rd, when Tomaas-not-Thomas on the old school blue steel bike and Guido slipped off the front... But that didnt last that long, and right away on Mountain Rd it was Todd H pushing up past everyone with Hunter P in tow. Chris C jumped hard and was looking to get a gap. Guido went too and so did Hunter P. The 3 had a small gap but by Cornwall Ave, the rest of the field was latching on. The rest of the way down Mountian was uneventful... Many faces up front.... Pace was decent, nothing crazy.

Onto Moss Farms where Kyle Foley, betting the lazy card, rolled off the front... A brief reaction came from the Devils Gear rider on a Fuji, but for the most part, the P'ton was ok with letting Kyle have some room to roam. He stretched out a decent gap of about 70-80 yards before BlingBling Maison jumped to bridge. That proved easier said then done and by the end of Moss, Maison was back in the fold. Stacked up traffic at the intersection stopped the field and let Kyle roll thru the Chicane with more of a gap. Up the hill before Marion, Chris C attacked again, but this time ended up dragging everyone up the hill. Kyle would keep the pressure on and roll into the industrial park with a handful of seconds.

Solid pulls from Blue Steel Tomaas, Tall John and Todd H eventually brought him back but break held right up till the corner of West Johnson. Chris C jumped again right away on West Johnson, bringing along Brian Koski, the rider on the white bianchi, Greg Ciocci, Guido, and a couple of others. ( ??? ) Chris was going good enough to get a gap and his chances of making it up to the sprint point looked good. Heading up toward Reinhard, Chris Butler from CCR killed it to make it across the gap. He also dragged up Ken-just-ken, making the lead group 7 or 8 strong with about 8 seconds on the field with a couple of stragglers in between. On Rienhart, Chris still was solo ing off the front, looking to trump everyone to the sprint. 3 or 4 guys jumped from the lead group and Ciocci made it to the corner first, though Chris B was right there as well. Everyone came back together on the decent and turning onto Peck the break was back.

Onto Route 10 the pace went up enough to cause some splits. Tomaas was up there, Devils Gear, Rondo, Kyle was back up to the front, Guido... etc. Some gaps had to be shut down by the time the Stop and Shop sprint was coming up. Even still there was a small group being led by Tall John and Chris C. John would lead everyone out for the hill, Chris was the only one to jump, but at the last moment, John pipped him to the top. Nice work Interlandi....

The rest of the ride thru town was slow... Once outside the lights, the 2 Foleys tried to sneak off by themselves... But that did last too long as Tall John was again setting a good pace. Heading into the finale, Richard Sachs Chris, and Chris Butler looked to outlast and escape the rest, but Hunter P came up hard and past them with a long half Kilo to go. Guido also kicked into low gear at the last moment and was able to power up to Hunters wheel. He had time to spare and was able to come around him to get to the end of the ride first....

Tuesday the 31st

5:59 & 1\2 start time doesn’t go over too well with some…

A respectable group of perhaps 40 riders out tonight. The ride got started at the agreed upon 6 pm. Rondo shot out of the parking lot with a couple of guys in tow, and the rest slowly followed…. Slight problem though… The Stage 1 guys and Mike McG were in the bathroom, answering nature’s call.

The Cheshire Cycling Crew does not condone such an act of carpet-bagging…. We were rolling up just as Ron and the others were rolling out and we didn’t know.

Anyway, once on route 10, Rondo, armed with a stiff tailwind and deep dish carbon hoops, was out to capitalize on the pants-down situation… He hit it hard with Greg Ciocc (?) from Keltic and another rider in tow.

The field behind also cranked it up really quickly, led by Craig Luekens and Eric M, and by the turn off route 10, everyone was together.

The fast pace didn’t let up there… And the Medics ( less Mike ), Eric M and Ron were drilling it. Also up there were the Yalies again, Dave McC, Adam on a Red C-Dale and another youngster on an older Trek. Single file it lit up thru the back roads… Meanwhile, as if the Stage One crew didn’t have enough chasing to do over the past weekend, were still behind, but were working well together to close down the premature gap. Coming up to Moutain Rd, Guido, back from being utilized in North Dakota to stop the Red River, pedalled off the front with another rider ( Peter P? ) but traffic issues turning onto Mountain killed that. The high speed continued down Mountain road… And thanks to the tail wind, it was perhaps a record-time run from the start of the ride to the light on route 68. Ridley Ben, Daddy Luekens, Adam, Peter P, Tri Guy with Knee-Highs, BlingBling Maison from CCR, and Gregg F from CCR all pitching in. The field had spit off a few riders by the time the light came. The field waited for a few seconds then rolled thru the green. The Stage 1 group was just rolling up as the light turned red and had to wait. A few guys ( and a girl ) protested the forward advance of the Peleton… But such as is what makes the ride so special, they were waiting for no one…

Onto Moss Farms were the craziness didn’t stop… Luekens and Yalie-Adam attacked early and sent the rest of the ride reeling, Ciocc from Keltic gave chase, Hunter P closed a couple of gaps, Eric M was setting a good pace…. Ken just Ken also was trying to leash the front…. Luekens and Adam succeeded in getting a gap by sheer muscle over the small risers on Moss Farms. As the ride went into the Chicane the damage was evident. The 2 leaders, being chased closely by a lone Guido…. Then Eric M, Hunter P and Ridley Ben, and then a small chase group of maybe 12 or so… Meanwhile, further behind, the Stage One group had gone back to good ol fashion hard teamwork, and was gaining on the front. Mike McG doing the lion's share, but had Crazy Chris, Chris C, Tall John, Little T, Todd H all pitching in as well.

On the hill past the chicane, the 2 leaders were within striking distance, but Guido got taken back by the hill. Hunter P jumped hard on the hill and bridged the gap just as Craig and Adam were ramping the speed back up on Marion. Despite efforts from Peter P, Chris B from CCR, Eric M and others, the gap went up to the 3 pretty solidly. Once Hunter P got settled in, the 3 went to work and rode strongly together, stretching the gap the whole way up to the sprint on Reinhard. Craig let Hunter sprint off with no contest for 1st up the hill. As the 3 were cruising down to Peck, the gap was finally coming down, as Guido, Chris B, Tri Guy, Ken Just Ken and Peter P were working hard to bring it back.

Some traffic for the turn onto Peck Ln slowed the 3 leaders and by the end of the long hill over the crap roads on Peck, it was all back together. Everyone rode nice up to route 10, were Peter Kenny and Gregg F took the ride thru the corner and up the hill past Cheshire Park. Into the headwind now, things slowed down, but guys like Rondo, Peter P and Eric M kept it moving along decently. Not fast enough to hold off the Stage One group though, and moving up to the StopNShop Sprint, they made the connection and Chris C, Mike McG and Little T were riding straight up and thru the head of the ride toward the sprint. Little T had no problem snatching that prize.

The group left for dead at the start would now make sure to be heard amongst the others and the ride thru Cheshire was a dramatic affair. Once past the lights, everyone turned their attention to the common enemy, Mister Pimp-Headwind. Mike McG, Chris C, Tall John… all of em…. were up there, just keeping the tempo that it took to catch back on. Luekens, Adam, hunter P, and Peter P were there as well, drilling into the wind. Heading into the finale, there was some hesitation, some splintering, some sitting-up. A small group with Adam, Guido, Little T and a couple of others broke clear, and it was Guido sticking it out to the very end.....

If this was a sign of things to come for the summer it should be interesting… Yalies running amuck, Little T (somewhat) kept at bay, Scott CR1’s instead of Cannondale’s everywhere, cops running guys off the roads, Rondo getting angrier and even more unapproachable…… Its gonna be wild
