A running account of the "race without an entry fee"..... The Tuesday night ride

Tuesday the 27th

Riders Look for Back-up, it's not there...

On and off rain kept todays ride to a group of about 22 or 23. Some strong faces were missing from the ride. Mike McG, Empire Matt, Peter P, Eric M and a couple of others.
Greg from Keltic (or was it Jesse?) and Guido led things off off route 10. They were caught as the field went thru corners and soon it was just Guido up the road with a surgeon Hacker. Chris C, Todd H and Hunter P kept the gap in check. Hunter P then jumped across right before the turn onto Mountain Rd. and that brought enough attention to the front. The trio were caught pretty quickly. Rondo, Chris C, Todd H, and probably Little T closed that shop down quick smart.

Lots of guys going all over the place on Mountain Rd. Guido had another brief go off the front, John Gregory was cruising, Dave M from CCR racing was up there too. Chris B from CCR put in a little dig toward the end too. But nothing developed, as per usual for this section.

If ever we figure out how to get that light green for us, the fireworks will start to go off on this road...

Onto Moss Farms were Chris B and Hunter P went staight to hard tempo mode. That brought Hacker off the front of the feild and Chris C too. The four had a bit of a gap but everyone was moving fast, so the potential was there and the effort was doing some damage. The smaller peleton was stretched to chasing-maximum. The four worked well for about a half mile, then
Hacker surged off the front. Hunter P chased him down and the 4 was down to 2 by the "chicane". The chase was hard behind them tho. The rain started coming down hard at this point.

Going up the hill to Marion, the 2 were caught by a flying Chris C and company. That led to Hacker staying on the gas past the corner, and riding away with Rondo, Little T and Todd H. Again, the usual speed train that picks up the flicked at this point in the ride just wasnt there and that gave advantage to the break. The new quartet had a gap of about 5 seconds as they gingerly turning into the Industrial Park area.

Chris C, Guido, Hunter P and a couple of others dug deep to keep the gap close. Then Chris B, riding his 21 pound rain bike, flew across the gap and made the connection seem easy. That was pretty much all the group needed and the 5 had horsepower to spare up the road as they turned onto West Johson Ave. The guys that were capable of bringing them back were stretched thin and near redline.

Credit Hacker with the Schoolhouse sprint ( i think ). Behind them, Thompson from Keltic, Chris C, John G, Greg from Keltic, all doing their fair share in the workload.

Onto Peck Ln where it seems Little T and Rondo sat up from the break. (reason?). Undeterred and confident they had completely severed the elastic, the trio of Todd H, Chris C and Hacker went on with out them. It was starting to look like kilo 200 of Paris-Roubaix... Guys all over the place going up Peck Ln. Guido had a hard turn off the front with Hunter P chasing him down. Going over the train tracks, it was Todd H's turn to come off the break. He was soon back into the fold and that left just Chris C and Hackattack off the front.

Going back into Cheshire was a little on the sedate side, traffic lights made sure to kill off any hope of brining back the two escapees. There was opportunity though for Guido to get in one more romp off the front... He is one rider who gets away with not knowing the "rules of engagement".
We will have to hear from our two strong men as to who took the finish, but as the remnants of the chase pulled up to Shepard ave, thru the fog and drizzle, the figure of Chris B could be made out driving alone up to the top of the climb.... Maybe the breakaway wasnt enough training for him. And for that, its long overdue that he be added to the cast.

As alway's nice write-up. I want the record to show that I was used and thrown to the gutter by Todd, Rondo, 'T', Hacker and a handful of others after I pulled them into the bottom of the hill on Jarvis. I was just thrown away like a $20 whore. As alway's, a fun ride just to bad it rained so hard. Guido, nothing personal, it just got a little frustrating after being on the rivit at the front and then watching you surge through 5 miles an hour faster than everyone else. You are very strong but it makes more sense if we are in a pace line to take your turn at the front and then pull off into the wind and let the next guy come through.

I know, I know, quit preaching and just ride your your F-ing bike!

See you guys next week.
later,
Chris C.

I am seriously thinking we need to remove the ability to place anonymous comments.

What a dumb comment:

"Why bother pedaling in the rain any way??? All of you guy's are just a bunch of wanna be posers, that wish you were in "the tour". Step your game up or you will get no where in life!"

What does it mean? I venture to say that there are more poeple who have accomplishments in education, work , family and athletics than that one idiot would ever hope for. Also, the anoym who said it must have come from a Stage 1 guy must be more of an idiot!

Its starting to look like people are getting the message that there is no finishing sprint at Wentworths - although three guys still went for it. If you still have so much strength you can sprint at the finish - I humbly suggest you turn right at Aunt Chilada's and work it out up the hill or spend more time at the front during the ride.

I know, I know - I sit in too much - but I am working on getting stronger... slowly....

Dave, I'd agree to the first part. However, I don't think there was a sprint of the three guys up front. I for my part spent most of the final 2.5 miles a few bike lengths in front of the group, I was passed by Alessio with a mile to go and Ron followed him soon after, none of the passings looked to me like a sprint. Alessio actually turned right up the hill. And I would argue the three of us probably spent as much time in the wind as possible during the ride.

Being new to the group my word weighs little but I would support the no sprint rule. I am just not completely sure what is "SG sprinting" and what isn't. My understanding is out of the saddle and aggressive moves. I would think fast speed alone - smooth and steady - should not fall under the no-sprint rule. But I'm not sure.

Any clarifying comments would be highly appreciated.

Chris, don't worry, I didn't take it personal. It was a misunderstanding from my side. When you guys went pace line rotation I was aligned to take the next slot but it then looked to me the rotation had stopped so I just took my own jump. I didn't mean to screw up the pace line, I just wanted to keep my speed up.

nice ride despite the rain

This is the greatest blog ever.

Ok, the comment that was removed was removed "by author"... We never saw it here at HQ. We have talked about removing some of the comments that feature gratuitous use of foul language. There are kids ( 14 and younger ) that read this blog. Please keep that in mind.

Regarding the sprint... I think this week there was no "sprint" because we were all beat handily by the break.

But in line with Guido's comment, i will stand by the fact that there is nothing wrong with how we have been conducting it in the week's past. I dont think there is much more danger in the final "no standing" finish as there is in the rest of the ride. Sprinting for the bridge was a long time ago. And with a actual finish line and it being slightly downhill, i remember it as being VERY dangerous. Some less experienced ones might say the same about today, but really it is different. If there is ever a mishap, of course i will eat my words, but i for one dont sense danger when we (really just 5 or 6 guys usually) are hammering toward the end of the ride.

If all it takes is to stop referring to it as a "Sprint", then we can do that. But anyone that is worth the helmet they have on knows that in no way is this like a race sprint. We just use that term cause its easy. ( the same goes for the phrase, "Race without an entry fee" . We use this title for the novelty, not cause we think it is like a real race & not cause we are riding like it's like a race. )

We can stop referring to the "winner" in the recap, but that's boring and all the sexy girls (&guys) that read the blog will be disappointed.

And then there's always the thought that we should finish it on the hill.

My best guess is that the under 14 kids reading the blog are the ones posting the stupid comments.

Don't 14 year olds have better things to do than read a blog about the TWC? I mean, isn't pimple cream, braces and the opposite sex the key focal points for kids at that age?

14 year old kids suck. They ruin everything including this blog.
