A running account of the "race without an entry fee"..... The Tuesday night ride

Tuesday the 29th

A slower ride for once as the rain clouds part way for the throwdown.

The rain ended promptly at 3:45 and by 6 the roads were pretty much all dry. A thinned out crowd of perhaps 45 rolled out of the Sleeping Giant parking lot at 6:01 PM

Turning off RT10 saw little action going on up front. Tall John from Stage 1 snuck off the front with Dillon P in tow. Soon after a small group containing Guido, Todd H, Matt the new Empire Cycling rider, and a couple of others was gassing it to get up to the duo. By the end of Brooksvale the group had been established, and even tracked down an "early out of the gate" Rondo. Strong riding from Peter P, Joe K, Mason from Dartmouth and Julio from Stage 1 kept it close.

Turning onto Mountain Rd, Hacker deftly set himself up for a strong bridging effort. But once he did, the whole group seemingly sat up and was soon caught after the crest of the first riser on Mountain Rd. The pace down the rest of Mountain wasn't that exciting. many different guys had a share in driving the pace.

Onto Moss Farms where Chris Butler from CCR shook the dirt from his shoes and rode off the front. He got about 20 yards before a cast of characters woke up and started in after him. By the end of Moss, going down toward Jarvis, we had another small split in the field. Matt, Chris C, "Look" rider, Matt from Stage 1, and others were pushing the tempo. But it all came together for the "chicane".

Once again, Little T drove the pace up the hill toward Marion, but this week, even in this hotspot of asphalt, the pace was controlled and all was together with relative ease going towrads the industrial park and the hills of North Cheshire. The slowdown let Chris C ride off the front the entire length and past the corner of Knotter. But it came back together with some strong riding by Rondo, Peter P and Joe K (pushing a cross bike and 35 mm tires this week!). Guido again tried to jump off befroe the corner of West Johson, but he never got more than a few bikes up.

The pace picked up a bit on West Johnson, Peter P, Hunter P, and Matt from Empire all chipping in. Matt rode strong thru the intersection of Peck and West Johnson. This set up a strong pull by Hacker with Julio in tow. They powered off the front, turning onto Reinhard with seemingly no one around to mark it. They kept up the effort to the Schoolhouse sprint point ( Hacker ). Rondo and Stage 1(Tall John) gave chase down the hill.

Turning onto Peck, Mike McG and Chris C, among others, had a hand in keeping it going into the wind that never made up its mind. It was all over the place today. Turning back onto RT 10, everyone was together and the wind was mostly from the back. Nothing too exciting heading into the center of Cheshire. Everyone had plenty of chance to setup for the jump up to Stop n Shop. And it was Mike McG getting that one with a couple of guys kicking hard to stop him.

Blazing back into Hamden, the usual suspects were pitching in. Rondo, Mike, Matt, The Foley's, Stage 1 as a team, Mason, Peter P, and Andy G from Keltic, (filling in for the missing Eric M) were all present and active. Tall John laid it down pretty good in the final half kilo, letting Peter P power away to the finish, just holding off a yielding Rondo.

I know I'm going to catch hell for this, but how bout we switch up the route? Rt 10 is to heavy with lights and traffic, and peck lane has more bumps than the Paris Roubaix!

So here is a route that takes care of both of those issues and only adds 1.2 miles to the loop.

Cut and copy in the address bar and let the discussion begin!

An 'A' for effort but a bad idea. If you think that Peck Ln has potloles, then you have not been on Tutle Road on the back side of Sleeping Giant where it looks like the route would go. There are holes on that road the would swallow both wheels. Also, the route has us going over RT-10 after the west johnson climb. Bad idea, guys that get dropped on the west johnson climb will try to cut the light to catch back on. Not a good idea. The route would also have us cut across RT-70. 40 guys trying to cut across RT-70 at 30 mph. Good luck!

Rider of the week goes to Pete P. for having big time pop at the end of the SGR.

Anonymous said...

why not just cut down Cook hill to 10 to cut out Tutle. I hate rt 10 too! but that intersection at 70 would be rough...

Can you vote for yourself for rider of the week?

Dillion you are one of my most favorite riders, but have no clearance yet for rider of the week.

Anonymous said...

Dillon should at least get most improved rider-if not rider of the week

What is this a love forum? "Pete P. has lot's of pop", "Dillion, your my favorit rider". This is turning gay'er every week. Stop with the kiss-up's and just ride your bike.

Talk about gay Chris, I heard you were a member of the Village People.

I tend to agree with Chris' thoughts. Crossing RT 10 at that point is a tough sell. Tutle rd sux. But I'm all for cutting out RT 10 and adding a smidge more to the ride.
I would give this route a try.

I'm just glad we're discussing a different route! It seems as though we all just do the ride we do cuz we're too lazy to change it, when way better routes exist!

You tools, I have been doing the Sleeping Gaint Ride since 1990. The balls of you guys wanting to change the ride!! Instaed of thinking of stupid shit maybe you should A) Learn how to pull thruogh on the right side. B)Show some edicet(like when you sit on someones wheel for a mile dont attack them on a rise.) C)Dont pass cars on the right. Just because you have been doing the ride for two or three years you think you have a say. FU So some respect, whaaa We had to stop for the light. Maybe if you raced on the weekend it wouldnt be life or death if you WIN the tues ride. You bunch of tools. So pull your pink thongs out of the cracks of your asses and ride your bike. Also if you are going to post somthing have the sack to sign your name.

FU SO SOME RESPECT FOOL!

that was awesome. Ron that was the best bit i've read all day. Even tho i had to read "edicet" over like 6 times to get the point.

Rider of the week goes to Eric Merrill becausse he changed the Sleepy Giant ride and decided not to tell Rondo or anyone else what changes he made. Ah-hA!

Bubblelicious

Anonymous said...

Why does this week's write-up say the ride was so slow?
Why don't chicken have lips?
Why am I unable to understand the word "edicet"?
Why don't we do a figure 8 loop or enter a demolition derby with our bikes?
Why don't we try a new route that crosses route 10 at 30mph?
I would also love to avoid Route 10 and it's appreciated that you guys are thinking about it, but you'll need to propose a better route that doesn’t cross heavily congested roads and also avoids left turns. Remember, the Matriarchs of the ride will need to agree to any suggested changes.
So, Rondo, your comments are spot-on....

I attacked an hour early, and solo'd in for the win. I even did it with my pink thong tangled in my bib shorts. I ran red lights, and I was out of the saddle for the finish, just for added drama.

Porper spelling is oh so important in the world of painting - bike racing. I do think that Merill wears a pink thong though. I have seen it through his white shorts.

These are the best blog comments yet. As much as I hate to say it, I agree with angry ron. Quit your bitch'n and ride your bike. And sign your name to your posts! Anonymous, that's BS!!!! Where's my pink thong at????

The HELL that was predicted 19 comments ago has thoroughly been caught!

Your comments about the new route show that you're all set in your ways.

Just so you know. The things you dislike about the proposed route already exist in the current ride.

My apologizes for thinking outside the box!

I will revisit this issue when someone is killed on rt10 by a blind old lady in 1976 caddy...
Or when our "please sit down for the final sprint" comments don't work any more...

But, I will keep my most humble mouth shut!

Did I see a response from Blondie?????

Dillon P,
If you want a lesson from the poeple "who are set in their ways" about the current rule of NOT sprinting, then ask Blondie to tell a story for you children....

Anoniinous (spelling unimportant)

Rondo said...

Blondie you are truly a man of wisdom !!!!! The young pups on the ride think that its there time in the sun, but the rusty old dogs still have a few tricks to show them.

Well...seeing that i have not joined you all in the last 6 years or so I wont dis anybody. Maybe after my comeback...

Rondo, i think us old guys started doing the ride back in the late 80's and we were in awe (and still are) of the likes of Guy.D'Aniello and Luigi (to mention a couple) who was at least 2 decades older and they were kicking everyones ass on the road and to the bridge.

Nobody would think of dis'ing those icon's.

We even gave that young pup named Lance a good'ol ass whoopin and didnt break his balls too bad.

Say hi to LongJohn, Mike McG, and any of the others who avoided running me over and mutilating me that day a fatass wheel sucker tried to be Sean Kelly at the bridge and almost killed me and a few others. There's 14 or so miles out there on Tuesday to be a real hero. Sprint on Sundays for the 15 bucks. : )

Forgot to sign,

It seem's that there is a lot of tradition on this ride. Unfortunatley, I am a relative newcomer to the ride, only been doing it for 5 or 6 years now. In my experience, you don't F with tradition. The ride route will not change just because some of the you kids get a little scared going down Rt-10. If you dont like the traffic, then go fast enough to keep guys from passing you. The faster you go, the safer it is.

Is this ride open to the public?
Im a mid-pack cat5 who needs a good ride on Tuesdays.

Crowell how come when I read your posts I do it with that Booston accet. The ride is open to all,we welcome everyone with open arms.

I just wanted to thank you all for nominating me once again for rider of the week. I am genuinely touched. Of course I must give most of the credit for my success to my mother, Ronald, for all of the excellent spankings...thanks mom!

The ride is open to all. No collection plate is ever passed. And the comments about needing pink thongs to do the ride are only halfway serious. It's a great ride to train for the brutality of racing. See you tuesday.

From reading that reply, that surely is Blondie !!

So a short-fable for the "young-pups" on the TWC ride:
Blondie has spoken so you must honor thy words. Blondie was known to pace the beginnning 5 miles of the ride at 25+ mph. That boy would then continue to ride his ass off for the entire ride AND then sprint for the bridge. It was one of the "ride-suckers" who caused all the problems as the sprint wound up at ~200 meters from the bridge. On that one day, Blondie was hooked by a "ride-sucker" at 35mph and the rest is written in TWC history.

Another fable includes Luigi drinking too much wine, crashing on Route 10 and being unconscious for 5 minutes as his eyes rolled back in his head....but this is an entirely different story cuased by drinking and cycling, not by "ride-suckers".

So Blondie, get back out on the ride, we truly miss you.

Anonymous said...

He was dirnking wine allegedly.
Do not smer the greatness of Lugi. Shame on you.

What does TWC stand for?

Tuesday World Championships?
Today We Crap
Turkey Wrap Chimi-changa?
Two Women Cook?
Twines Wound Counterfeit?

I got pages of these...

I've been doing the Tuesday on and off for roughly 3 years now. I don't think we should change the route. It is tradition, plus I like going to work and hear co-workers bitchin about us. Would be nice if our tax money did pay for them to repave peck lane, not only for riding, but it's just as bad to drive on it as well. Note: Tuttle Road to Hamden is currently being paved as we speak.

Wow! 38 comments full of crap! To sum up: No the ride won't change. Some people where thongs on the ride, there was a love fest with Dillon and Pete vying for best rider and most improved rider (gay), I was outed as one of the Village People, Eric M. attacked so early that he missed the ride, and yes anyone can join the fun on tuesday nights, just be prepaired to throw-up your lunch and if you flat or get a mechanical, it's your problem because we ain't stop'n. Christ, you could be one of the ride regulars late for the ride on the oposite side of the road and we will not even slow down to let you across. What a great ride!
